Dr. Ulrich Bünger

Senior Scientist

Ulrich Bünger, Senior Scientist, has been continuously employed by LBST since 1990 and has been Chairman of the Board for the Ludwig Bölkow Foundation since 2015.

His expertise extends to research and consulting for clients from industry and politics with a focus on the transition to a fully renewable energy economy. In the context of his projects, he has worked on system analysis of energy and transport systems, fuel cells and hydrogen, life cycle analyses, energy storage concepts for hydrogen but also for natural gas, both stationary and in mobile applications. He also coordinated European funding and strategy projects for many years (e.g. HyNET, HyWays, HyLights, HyUnder and H2moves Scandinavia). Most recently, one focus of his work has been on the future role of the gas industry and infrastructure.

He studied mechanical engineering (energy and process engineering) at the University of Hannover, where he also completed his PhD on the subject of cryogenic storage of natural gas (LNG). In addition to a two-year post-doctoral stay at the SINTEF Institute in Trondheim (Norway), he took up a part-time position as Assistant Professor for Hydrogen Energy Systems at the Natural Science and Technology University (NTNU) in Trondheim (Norway) from 2003 to 2013.

He is fluent in German, English and Norwegian.

Ulrich Bünger is author of numerous publications in expert books and peer reviewed journals and has given numerous national, European or international lectures on the topics of energy and transport.
