What is the role of energy infrastructure and storages in the energy transition?

The fluctuating and geographically distributed feed-in of renewable energy is creating new requirements for energy systems. Infrastructure for transporting and distributing energy must be adapted to accommodate changing energy carriers and supply patterns. At the same time, the transition towards a decarbonised energy system is increasing the need for energy storage.

A systems perspective on infrastructure and storage

LBST assesses infrastructure and storage solutions from a technical, economic and regulatory perspective. Our analyses consider the interactions between electricity and gas infrastructure and examine the role of these systems in national and international energy markets.

Using techno-economic assessments and detailed simulations, we investigate:

  • how the energy transition affects infrastructure requirements,
  • the development of electricity, gas and hydrogen infrastructure,
  • storage needs in systems with a high share of renewable energy,
  • the technical and economic characteristics of different storage technologies,
  • investment requirements and infrastructure pathways for a decarbonised energy system,
  • regulatory frameworks and their impact on system development.

Our work provides a robust basis for strategic decisions, infrastructure planning and the assessment of future energy systems.

Investment needs of European energy infrastructure

For the EU Commission (DG ENER), LBST, in partnership with Trinomics and Artelys, has identified the investment needs for a fully decarbonized energy system in Europe. Major investments in H2 pipeline infrastructure are needed especially by 2030, in addition to the expansion of transmission grids.
